Down the Mines: Mining Employment Numbers in China

Metals may be getting stronger, but employment numbers to get metals out of the ground are declining

Mining is a vital sector for China in terms of economic health. Examining employment numbers in the mining sectors we can see that mining employment growth is down across the board. Coal mining is down -8% in employment growth. Ferrous metals, i.e. steel, is down -22%. This contrasts to steel output which is slightly higher and upward pressure in real estate could lead steel higher, but fewer employees are working to mine steel. Non-ferrous metals has decreased by the largest percentage in YTD comparisons with other sector decreasing by 5% ​
