Dr Boyce Watkins: Black Wealth building is the new civil rights movement

By Dr Boyce Watkins

For most of my life, I’ve been taught to immortalize the Civil Rights activities that took place in the 1960s. Many of us are taught in public schools (run by people who don’t look like us) that due to the actions of the 60s, America is now a beautiful country that is healed of it’s ugly, racist past.

But decades after Dr King marched throughout this nation, we still find ourselves feeling like slaves. While a few of our people are granted the privileges and advantages of constrained assimilation, the masses of black folk are still kept in economic and political cages, waiting for the day when we have the opportunity to recapture the humanity that was stolen from us 500 years ago.

The reason for our frustration is that we’ve been lied to. While political advances look good on paper, they are easily scaled back the minute white folks decide they don’t like us anymore. My opinion is that they’ve never liked us very much, and that most ethnic groups in America have been trained to look down upon black people with rodent-like disdain. It’s not entirely their fault, since America is a country that spent 400 years training the majority of its citizens to believe that black people are inferior.

In this video below, I speak to this issue. I hope you can hear me when I tell you this: Black people will not and cannot achieve any semblance of equality in this country until we learn to build wealth. Politics is driven by money, so political advances without economic strength is about as meaningless as someone giving you a plate with no food on it.

Take a look and feel free to share your thoughts. It’s important that we have this conversation in the new millenium.
