ABC Anchor Scoffs at Malia and Sasha Obama Wearing $20,000 Gowns Then Apologizes

Meanwhile, one reporter, Kristen Sze, focused her attention on the two Obama girls, Malia and Sasha, who were attending their first such grandiose affair.

What caught Sze’s eye wasn’t how beautiful all three ladies looked, with Mrs. Obama in her Jason Wu gown and the girls in their Naeem Khan gowns; it was the price tags that they came with.

Sze, an ABC 7 news anchor out of San Francisco took to Twitter to question the appropriateness of the two young ladies wearing gowns that cost from “$17,000 to $20,000”.

She tweeted, “14-yr old Sasha Obama wears $20,000 dress to state dinner. #moms, would you let your teen wear such pricey duds?”

Of course, she didn’t even bother to first find out if the gowns were even on loan by the designers.

That single tweet was enough to get her followers who aren’t too fond of the First Family to share their thoughts.

One went, “Those dresses are the price of a small house. TOTALLY INAPPRROPRIATE when the economy is as it is.”

Another one compared the First Family to the legend of Marie Antoinette – who was thought to have no consideration for the starving peasantry.

“Someone once said ‘Qu’ils mangent de la brioche’ – let them eat cake,” one tweeted. “They are royalty now while many suffer with no work. A slap.”

Supporters defended the ladies with tweets that shut down Sze’s implications with tweets like “You’re not the First Lady of country in a passionate relationship with capitalism hosting a State Dinner…” (@youngsinick).

To which @carlettaisgreat added, “Better question: Is your mom The First Lady? No? Well, STFU, your opinion is irrelevant.”

Well, if Sze had taken the time to do some research she could have found out that “Mrs. Obama pays for her clothing. For official events of public or historic significance, such as a state visit, the first lady’s clothes may be given as a gift by a designer and accepted on behalf of the U.S. government. They are then stored by the National Archives,” according to Joanna Rosholm, the First Lady’s press secretary.

Sze did have enough decency to admit she had made a mistake by tweeting, “Sorry my Obama girls dress tweet failed 2 come x as intended. Was trying 2 have mom convo on cost of clothing.”

And, “Sasha & Malia looked amazing at State Dinner! Super happy they got 2 attend one in dad’s last year in office.”

She said she had “Deleted tweets when realized they failed big time. Didn’t mean 2 hurt any feelings.”
