Tidal, the online streaming company Jay Z formed with a lineup of fellow superstars, will be donating $1.5 million to groups that support the Black Lives Matter movement.

Last October, Jay Z celebrated having one million Tidal subscribers with a charity concert dubbed “Tidal X:10/20.” The show brought him together with Lil Wayne, Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Prince et al, and managed to raise $1.5 million.

Tidal, in collaboration with Roc Nation, made an announcement last Friday, on the 21st birthday of Trayvon Martin. The company announced that donations will be made to organizations that were created by families of victims of police shootings, including the likes of Trayvon Martin Foundation, the Michael O. D. Brown We love Our Sons and Daughters Foundation, Opportunity Agenda, Hands Up United, Sankofa.org and the Oscar Grant Foundation.

In the announcement Tidal said, “Tidal X: 10/20 was the first of a series of philanthropic music events curated by Tidal in order to raise awareness, funds, conscious engagement and dynamic action for transformative and positive social impact. All of the organizations selected work to uphold the purpose of the Tidal X: 1020 Fund, which is to support nonprofit organizations dedicated to advancing positive community relations and effecting systemic change for the development and sustainability of just societies.”

Other local groups that can expect some of the grant include California’s Community Coalition, Florida’s Dream Defenders, Illinois’ Black Youth Project, Baltimore’s Justice Fund, Empowerment Development Corporation, New York’s Million Hoodies, NY Justice League and Ohio’s Ohio Students Association/Organizing Collaborative.

The grant will be managed via the New World Foundation – an establishment that is known to handle funds for several similar civil rights groups and social movements.

“The process of acquiring recommendations [for nonprofits] was collaborative and inspired by the message that speaks to racial and social inequities and injustice in our society. Each year we will support a different initiative. Our ideology is to have a hi-fi level of consciousness in everything we do,” said Dania Diaz, managing director of philanthropy at Roc Nation.
