Maasai Mohandas Singleton, who is the son of acclaimed “Boyz N the Hood” director John Singleton, has recently launched a GoFundMe page to help pay for the completion of his college education.
His page introduces him with, “My name is Maasai Mohandas Singleton. I’m a second semester senior at USC in the Writing for the Screen and Television program. I write things like Dorkly style skits about Pokémon as a food source, Teen Titans Go episodes where Starfire ‘Supermodels’ Lex Luther’s newest line of war suits, and adventure screenplays about international rap tournaments in Japan. But, in order to move foreword [sic] with this work, I need help.”
According to Maasai, he was forced to take to having strangers pay to complete his studies because his father has cut him off financially. He said the news came too late, leaving him no time to apply for enough financial aid. He said, “… with only one month before my final semester, my father has informed me that he won’t be helping me with tuition. The timing of this information is such that I’m not able to apply for many financial aid options that would otherwise be available.”
He added, “I’ve met with the financial aid office, and even with loans, I simply won’t be able to make up for the nearly $30,000 due this semester to cover the final 20 units that I need to graduate. Tuition is due in just three weeks.”
While there may be a thousand reasons why a father would no longer want to pay for their children’s education, one can’t help but wonder what could have Maasai done that was so bad it made John cut him off and at such a critical time of his son’s education.
Whatever the case may be, Maasai says that he hopes the public will be able to help him raise at least $6,000 – the amount that would allow him to setup a payment plan which will then let him pay the balance off and “still go to school.”
