Lil Wayne offered him millions, but this rapper turned it all down (podcast)
by Dr Boyce Watkins
I am a huge fan of the rapper Dee-1 out of New Orleans. Dee represents exactly what hip-hop can be when it is used to lift our people rather than destroy them. He is an amazing rapper with a huge following. Carries himself with pride, speaks to the people, and is making a difference in the lives of the next generation.
One other thing that some people don’t know is that Dee turned down a chance to rap with Cash Money/Young Money records, the label partially owned by the rapper Lil Wayne and his mentor, Brian Williams (aka Birdman).
I got a chance to sit down and talk to Dee for a while, and I was truly impressed with the strength of his moral compass. He’s an educated black man and a natural leader. He also seems to truly understand the power of hip-hop and how it can be used to make the world into a better place.
