The Carolina Panthers will not have Ron Rivera on the sideline for the first time in nine years. Rivera was fired as head coach on Tuesday and defensive backs coach Perry Fewell will be the interim coach when the Panthers face the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday (10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET, FOX, DirecTV) in a Week 14 game.

Panthers’ owner David Teeper fired Rivera after the Panthers suffered a 29-21 loss to lowly Washington in Week 14. The Panthers (5-7) have lost four consecutive games in the midst of fading in the second half of the season for the second straight year. The Panthers defense, a strong point for many seasons, has struggled in 2019, ranking 22nd in total yards and 26th in points. Washington ran over the Panthers for 248 rushing yards and the Panthers have yielded a league-high 22 rushing touchdowns.

The Falcons (3-9) have performed worse than the Panthers this season, but head coach Dan Quinn remains employed, though he’s expected to be fired after the regular season. The Falcons lost to the New Orleans Saints in Week 13, their second consecutive loss after a brief two-game winning streak. Quarterback Matt Ryan threw for 312 yards against the Saints, but he attempted 50 passes, threw two interceptions and averaged just 6.2 yards per attempt.
