Ladies and gents, it’s that time of the year again…Nick’s Picks was just published over at Seeking Alpha. For those of you who aren’t familiar, Nick’s Picks is an annual project that I put together exclusively for Seeking Alpha readers where I build a theoretical portfolio of stocks with the goal to out perform the S&P 500 over the coming year. I began this project in 2016 and have succeeded in my goal of beating the SPY in both 2016 and 2017. To make this project even more fun, I’ve decided to let the value of this theoretical portfolio grow over the years. In 2016 I started with a “value” of $100,000.00 and at the end of 2017, the portfolio’s theoretical value was more than $143,000.00, representing a CAGR of 19.66%. Right now, with only two years’ worth of data under my belt with Nick’s Picks, it’s fairly difficult to draw any real conclusions from the project, but I invite you along on the ride with me – if nothing more, this is a fun project meant to show that a very simplistic investing approach by a retail investor can defy the odds and beat the broader markets on a year in and year out basis.
Happy New Year!
