Being a expat in Thailand my take is slightly different than some of the other comments. First and foremost Thais are taught to be respectful of authority from birth. Trump would love to be the King in the land of smiles. The endearing Thai wai given to visitors is misunderstood. It is given as a sign of respect to elders. You can return it to a younger person but if you do it first to a younger person you make a fool of yourself. They basically are not sufficiently taught to be suspicious of bankers financial instruments and can be conned into loans more easily. The comment about possibly having a payoff to a boss as part of the loan scheme might also be possible as there is significant corruption worked into the hierarchy.
