France Suspends Diesel Tax Hike

Emmanuel Macron Blinked. Gee, who coulda thought.

In the wake of massive protests and denials that policy would change, the French Government Will Suspend Fuel Tax Hike following riots.

Edouard Philippe, prime minister, will announce a moratorium on the increase in the fuel tax scheduled for January 1, in an attempt to ease the “yellow vests” protest, government sources told AFP.

Such a move would mark the first time in Emmanuel Macron’s 18-month presidency that he has backed down on measures in the face of street protests, and comes as he faces record low approval ratings.

Promise Delivered

Fancy that. Macron backed down off a pledge to save the world from global warming.

Wasn't that what his constituents asked for?

Yes, but only on the proviso they did not have to pay for it.

As noted previously: Politicians Beware: It's Best Not to Deliver What You Actually Promise.

"Solar and wind once built cost very little to operate."

Solar requires sun, wind requires wind. Neither is particularly reliable except perhaps in the desert.

But If solar is so great and the desert is so reliable, it seems to me the market would move in that direction.

Why didn't it? It's not yet profitable.

This was bound to happen in France, what do you expect with a man like Macron ? We shouldn’t be surprised.

Correct. Nobody was objecting to clean air, but the lower end of French society were objecting to bearing the costs.

I'm not against curbing C02 production by reasonable means, but how much of an effect will raising the cost of fuel make?

Most people drive because they have to. Not because they choose to. And truckers may actually end up driving more to earn more money to offset higher fuel costs.

"Macron backed down off a pledge to save the world from global warming. Wasn't that what his constituents asked for?"

If that is what they really want, why don't they stop driving ICE vehicles? Why don't they stop heating their home with fossil fuels? Dire consequences require dire action.

With the latest U.S. government report, i don't hear any screaming for China to immediately cut carbon emissions. I don't hear the global warming alarmist elites announcing they are immediately going to dramatically cut their carbon usage, to fight the dire predictions in the report- leading by example.
