Iran Strikes Back: Fires Dozen Missiles at US Forces in Iraq, Gold Soars

-edited

Iran stuck back at the US for Trump's assassination of Iran's military leader on a peace mission in Iraq.

Iran Strikes Back

If Trump wanted a war, he got one. Congratulations.

Iran fired more than a dozen missiles at two bases in Iraq where U.S. troops are stationed. Tehran says it is vengeance for killing of top Iranian general.

Cooler Heads Did Not Prevail

Most expected a milder retaliation for Trump's asinine assassination of an Iranian general but cooler heads did not prevail as Iran Fires Missiles at U.S. Forces in Iraq.

Iran launched more than a dozen ballistic missiles at two bases in Iraq where American troops are based, the Pentagon said Tuesday. The attack on the two bases, including Erbil in northern Iraq and the large Al Asad base in western Iraq, began about 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time, defense officials said.

There was no initial indication of any casualties or assessment of damage, defense officials said. At the bases, personnel remained hunkered down until an all clear could be given that the attack had concluded. Neither base has Patriot anti-missile batteries, which are used to defend against ballistic missile attacks, military officials said.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said the attacks were retaliation for the U.S. killing of Iranian Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani. In a statement, the IRGC urged the American people to demand their troops be withdrawn from the region and said any further aggression would be met with even greater force.

“We warn the Great Satan, the arrogant and tryant regime of the U.S. that any further aggression or other move will be met with a more painful and crushing response,” read the statement.

Common Sense Response From Rand Paul

Vice President Mike Pence called both House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) to brief them on the attack, according to aides for the two members.

Sen. Rand Paul (R., Ky.) urged administration officials to consult with Congress. “We need to stop the escalation before it leads to another endless war in the Middle East,” Mr. Paul said.

Don't Expect Common Sense From Trump

Please recall Trump Repeats Threat to Commit War Crimes.

So don't expect a common sense reaction from Trump. In fact, don't expect any sense from Trump.

He is now firmly in the grasp of the neocons who wanted war at any cost.

Do expect lies, more lies, and still more lies about the events leading up to Trump's Assassination of Qasem Soleimani, Iran's military leader.

Illegal Assassination?

Of course it was. In case you disagree, please see Assassination? Bloomberg Says No, Rand Paul and Bernie Say Yes

However, the assassination label is not what's important. Rather, it's Trump's blatantly stupid war-perpetuating policies that are important.

In response, note the Left Wing "Liberal Media" Cheers War and Assassinations. The list includes CNN, NBC, CNBC, and USA Today.

Expect more War Cheerleading

War sells newspapers!

Meanwhile nore that gold is up $25 to $1600, bond yields of 5-year duration and longer are down 7-8 basis points and the equity index futures are down about a percent.

Friendly Reminder

Confusion When There Should Be None

Cooler Heads, Finally?

Let's declare victory and move on.

Well, I for one did not want such a war especially considering it was provoked for US domestic political purposes, Trump knows the Trumpistan GOP is going to die in a Blue Tsunami in November without a war that is still raging on election day.

Did not want it, but now that it is here I say end Iran, Jimmy Carter SHOULD have had the balls to do it 42 years ago when our embassy was taken hostage, that was sovereign US soil and the invasion of it was an act of war, had he we would not have been treated to 42 years of Iranian belligerence and the destabilization of the entire Middle East by Iran and it's psychotic proxies.

I just hope this is not some half assed tit for tat escalation that lasts months and peters out as the first Gulf War did, all that Bush did was set us up for more war down the road. Go in and make sure that they never again can process nuclear materials, then wall them off politically and financially for 50 years. Really, if there was a way to nuke the entire shithole without triggering a wider war and ruining all downwind nations like India and Pakistan I would not have any feelings about just eradicating that place from the map.

Trump executed Soleimani and laid down a marker threatening Iran if they responded. They have. So now Trump is faced with looking emasculated or upping the ante and potentially doing something stupid. What's clear is that Iran has crossed Trump's red line.

I've said it before Soleimani was a terrorist. Trump may have been justified, but I have serious qualms as to whether Trump properly weighed the risks and rewards and engaged in a strategy as opposed to a tactic. I think its very probable Trump thought taking out Soleimani would be popular and illicit the same reaction he got when he took out Baghdadi.

I don't think this escallates quickly. I think Iran is testing Trump. They could lay low and strike again in a few weeks or months. Iran is long term and strategic. Trump is not. Trump is visceral

It falls to Pence to brief Pelosi and Schumer because Trump's not adult enough to call them himself. He's boxed himself in politically.

This is either a prearranged show, or it shows that the US forces are unprotected, and cannot even repel a ballistic missile attack. If serious, Iran would have used cruise missiles as it did against ISIS. And why now, and not wait until the US will vacate Iraq voluntarily? Hope, noone got injured.

I cannot imagine Trump addressing the nation without announcing retaliatory strikes.

F that idea Herkie.

The US overthrew a democratically elected PM of Iran and replaced that person with a Shah US Puppet.

Iranian citizens had every right to be totally pissed off at the US.

The US STARTED this 100% guaranteed.

I wonder, what the US's reaction would be, if it had been a high US official visiting Iraq, and the Iranians had blown him up with a drone. I'd guest, that Trump would be asking Congress to declare war on Iran? I bettcha the recruiting stations in the US have been jammed (Millineums egging to cut their mettle in war, and mark their place in the history of US warfare).

Trump is handling this well so far.

I am impressed that the futures market seems to be relatively unconcerned by this as of 10:30P EST.

We will now find out if President Trump meant what he said when he threatened to retaliate against 52 pre-selected Iranian targets. Because of that ultimatum Trump made 2 days ago, this is a no-win situation for him either way.

Iran has supposedly said they are finished attacking as long as the US does not respond to this evening’s ballistic missile strike. Meanwhile, they also said they are going to enrich their uranium to weapons grade.

Here’s hoping that calm minds prevail and that President Trump will do what is best for the US and the world.

Surprise Iran chose to lob some of their old missiles at two bases in Iraq. There was a tweet stream circulating a day or two ago about how Iran was going to target Trump properties because they were mad at HIM, not the American people. Why not lob a missile onto a Trump golf course? No one gets hurt and they make their point.

Just hope Trump regains his sense and decides to cool things down. I'm sure the neocons are whispering in his ear that this will help his re-election. But it will be his undoing. Time to channel Ronald Reagan, recognize his mistake and withdraw US troops from Iraq and Syria and claim victory.

Or in Trump speak: stop wasting resources in shit hole countries half way around the world and instead trying fixing our some of our own shit hole cties like D.C.

My take is that US, Israel, Saudi wants to destroy Iran modern technology military assets including their nuclear facilities located underground at fordow. They claim now openly; no nuclear bombs for Iran ! The only way is to destroy what is already achieved in that field. So Trump (read the deep-state promoters pushing hard) has now what is needed to start bombing Iran. The problem is to be able to destroy underground laboratories and centrifuges.using conventional warheads only.

If, by means of proxy, Russia and China decide to enter into to this ill advised fracas, Uncle Sam and his CB/MIC sponsored Deep State apparatchiks might just find their shit flapping in the breeze.

Qasem Soleimani allegedly on a peace mission is irrelevant. He was a commander of covert and overt operations targeting other countries for twenty years.

Trump has a poor track record when it comes to measured and strategic thinking. Indeed this is concerning.

For sake of perspective, destroying Libya, Iraq and attacking Afghanistan dwarf Soleimani. These are whole countries, while Soleimani is commander with a bloody and scary record.

Not arguing pro or con, but technically it was legal. Obama got legal clearance to drone a US citizen who was an Al Queda combatant because he was in the process of planning further attacks against the USA. Soleimani wasn't even a US citizen and most definitely planning attacks. So it was technically legal.
