Nonsensical Idea of the Day: All Whites to Blame for New Zealand Massacre

The nonsensical idea of the day award goes to Rachel Withers who proposes all whites are to blame for a massacre in NZ.

Slate author Rachel Withers says the Christchurch Shootings Should Implicate All White Australians.

Who is responsible for the terrorist attack that killed at least 50 New Zealanders as they prayed in their mosques? Looked at one way, the answer is simple: The shooter alone bears the guilt for his crimes. But the picture is wider than that.

In the days since the attack, attention has rightly been focused on the shooter’s admiration of white supremacists, especially violent ones like Norwegian mass murderer Anders Breivik, whom the shooter called his “true inspiration” and who allegedly gave his “blessing” for the attack. His manifesto called Donald Trump “a symbol of renewed white identity and common purpose,” and uses words that directly echo Trump’s own. The discussion can even be expanded to those who have helped shape the U.S. president’s message, like Steve Bannon, Stephen Miller, and Donald Trump Jr. It’s not unreasonable to place some measure of blame on those who have stoked the international spread of white-supremacist ideology.

So why do I feel so guilty? And why am I so angry not just at the obvious targets, but at my country?

I’m a white Australian. I know that blaming myself and my cohort is illogical, but I can’t escape the feeling that all of white Australia is implicated in the deaths—a white majority that has fomented and let foment hate.

Illogical Nonsense

Blaming innocent bystanders is of course illogical. Worse than that, such talk is counterproductive and perhaps extremely so.

In this era of college protective zones where one cannot say or do anything that might have the slightest negative implications, some whites are no doubt angry over the illogical coddling of anything and everything.

If someone with male body parts says they are a woman, then they are, even before an operation.

The Washington Post notes that you can be fined for not calling people ‘ze’ or ‘hir,’ if that’s the pronoun they demand that you use.

Anything you say, do, or think is likely to offend someone, and such demands do nothing but offend some whites who now feel oppressed.

Sensitivity Debate

How about a law that says it's illegal to hurt someone feelings?

That's how stupid this sensitivity debate has become.

I am white. I offer no apologies for that. My mom's best friend was black. Neither of my parents ever made racial slurs or comments.

But in the eyes of Rachel Withers (is it Ze Rachel, We Ratchel, or It Rachel) all whites are to blame for this.

Withers comments "You might think that this is all too strong, that placing at least some of the blame on white Australia is a kind of self-centered masochism, that blaming a nation’s culture for the sins of a citizen is like blaming humanity for the crimes of one man."

Yes, I do.

To some, the white majority is no doubt responsible for ISIS, pollution in China that kills hundreds of thousand of people a year, Japanese xenophobia, pestilence, and killer bees.

Did I leave anything out? If so, it must be because I am white.

Apologies not offered.

Hmm...this is why I so seldom (if now ever) trust the media. She picks the parts that fit the narrative that she wants about right-wing and white supremacy, while leaving ignored the more left leaning parts of the shooter's manifesto.

About 50% of Nazis and Fascists manifestos would be something that the left would love. One hint, both movements called themselves 'anti-capitalist'.

interesting how the orlando nightclub shooter's beliefs, skin color, motivation and ideology was rarely discussed in the media.

remember the recent killings of 120 christians in nigeria making the headlines recently? yea, i don't either, though the killings, at the hands of muslims, did happen

The hell with her. She's attempting to implicate all white 'Australians' ?? Did they all swim across the Tasman Sea to perpetrate the attack in New Zealand?? Sheesh....what an idiot.

Bravo Mish, you have now caught up with one of the hottest trends of "current year" - hating whitey. This trend has been hot for a few years and is one of the reasons why Trump was elected (and why some of his former fans now consider him a failure).

Salon had another article today claiming that there is a "global threat of white hate". And there have been plenty more like that over the past few years.

Unfortunately, you can't use arguments or logic with these people. They have an agenda and reasonable arguments don't matter. No amount of logic, inventions, charity or appeasement will help when you are confronted with people who hate you and want you gone.

The writer outdoes herself with moral grandstanding. If she really does feel personally responsible in any way because she is white, she needs to see a good therapist immediately.
