Trump's Powerful, In Your Face SOTU Speech Gets Feeble Response
Anyone expecting president trump to reach across the aisle tonight or for Nancy Pelosi to accept the measure if he did, were mistaken.
President Trump delivered a strong speech but very divisive STOTU Tuesday Evening. Here is a complete replay.
At the outset, Trump appeared to rebuff House speaker Nancy Pelosi's attempt at a handshake (22:30 mark), but it's difficult to say if that was intentional.
Towards the end of his speech Pelosi ripped a copy of the speech in a first ever event.
Division in America
There will be mud and animosity from here on out.
Some of the commentators, even on Fox News, expected some small olive branches from Trump, but it was "In You Face" all the way including ridiculous praise of Rush Limbaugh by Trump, sure to annoy any fence-sitting moderates.
Trump called Limbaugh “the greatest fighter and winner that you will ever meet. Thank you for your decades of tireless devotion to our country,” Trump said.
CBS News senior political analyst John Dickerson said, “Not only did the president not shake the speaker’s hand, she did not say the traditional words, ‘it’s my high privilege and distinct honor to introduce the president.’ You saw there it was an absolutely split evening. The division in America was out there for all to see.”
Feeble Democratic Response
The democrat response delivered by Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) was lame, totally boring.
Very Poor Start for Democrats
Iowa was a disaster for the Democrats as the moderates are even more split than Bernie and Warren.
If the election were tomorrow, I would bet on Trump.
However, it's not tomorrow, so we have to see how this unfolds. I doubt if the divisive tactics that got Trump in are what will keep him there. And there is still a very good chance of a recession.
Also, Trump is clearly overplaying the base in the praise of Limbaugh. This will not win moderates. The base can hardly be more energized.
Regardless, this is a very poor start of the national campaign for the Democrats, and a good one for Trump.
