Ben Thompson lays out what he thinks Amazon is up to with the move in Healthcare, and how Berkshire Hathaway and JPMorgan Chase fit in.
They could go one of two ways. Firstly, Amazon could move into the Insurance business, which Ben thinks is unlikely because Insurers need to operate on a big scale to be efficient.
The other, more likely direction is that Amazon, after building a healthcare interface for their employees (and for Berkshire and JPM's), and a standardized infrastructure for its healthcare providers, is that they will convert the latter into a marketplace, where pharmcies, insurers, etc. compete to serve the employees. Once this marketplace is functioning, they will offer the standardized interface to every large employer in the US.
Great insights !
